English translation: Camels

Arabic term or phrase: جمال
عندما هوت الجمال أسفل المنحدر وسارت في السفح الممتد بعد نهاية الكثبان الرملية، شاهده يرفع رأسه نحو الشمس، سار نحوه وعندما تأكد الضب بأن البدوي يقصده استدار وخطا بخيلاء وتابع مسيره نحو الكهف وانسرب في جحره، وقف أمام الجحر

I honestly can't work out if it's meant to be 'camels' or 'the beauty' - and does the ه refer back to الجمال? If so, why is هوت feminine?!
