German term or phrase: Anpassungsmodul
I'm looking for a suitable English equivalent for "Anpassugsmodul" in an educational context.

It doesn't seem to be a particularly common term and is just mentioned in passing in the text that I'm currently translating.

I've found the following page that shows an example usage: https://www.th-luebeck.de/hochschule/fachbereich-elektrotech...

I'm not sure if it's referring to an optional module that you can add on to another course of study or is some form of conversion course that you have to take.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think "bridging module" works best in the context, so have gone with this option.

Conversion module

Explanation:
I would read this as a learning unit/module which will get some "up to speed" to take a course (e.g. a Master's) but whose previous academic record does not fully meet the requirements for the course OR allows for previous relevant experience of a non-academic kind to be recognised/accredited via the module. The module thus provides a "top-up" which will enable the applicant to apply for/participate in the advanced course on a fully "qualified" basis.

Example sentence(s):
  • The Conversion Module offers recognition for prior learning through Middlesex University, UK, and provides the opportunity to benchmark your practice with a learning cohort in a similar Professional Review as participants of the Certificate in Coaching Pr

disagree  Gordon Matthews: I would understand a foundation course to be a year long full-time course of study, e.g. an arts foundation course, which prepares students to start a Bachelor of Arts course, perhaps specialising in some particular form of art.

disagree  Charles Rothwell (X): As the title implies, a "foundation" course lays the basis for later studies, but a "conversion" course recognises/accredits prior learning/achievement as an element of a further course of studies: http://www.studyin-uk.com/study-options/foundation/

agree  Lancashireman: I'm agnostic about what's on offer here, but I do recognise a concerted overreaction when I see one on this site.

neutral  D. I. Verrelli: It's good to be open-minded. What I call a "subject" other people call a "course", while others might call it a "unit"; what I call a "course", others might call a "program"; and so on. "Foundation" can be to address 'deficiency'. Stick with "module"?

-> Elucidate!// Sure! but the general term 'adaption course' (Math, Science, Banking) fits, don't you think? The course subject is specified.

agree  Gordon Matthews: Given the nature and purpose of the module, i.e. to bring students up-to-speed in a subject area which they have not yet studied (much), I think "adaptation" is more appropriate than "conversion", which implies converting e.g. from chemistry to history.

transfer student module

Explanation:
This could work in the US and Canada. Not sure about the UK or other regions. A transfer student is a student who has already done some course work at one college (Erststudium) and then decides to transfer to another. This concept also applies to secondary schools.

"The following non-degree credit classes are offered by this division:

Learning support courses in English, mathematics, and reading
Learning support classes in science and social sciences for students with CPC deficiencies
Specialized language skills courses for non-native speakers of English
Modules for transfer students in such areas as presentation graphics, word processing, and information retrieval."

assimilation module

Explanation:
Since this is not an everyday German term, the word 'assimilation' best captures (for me, at least) the core essence of "Angleichung von Vorkenntnissen".
