is that you can create shapes that are impossible to make with an "ordinary" mould - at least not with a reusable high precision mould.

You can create pieces with all sort of concave and convex shapes that would make it impossible to take the piece out of an "ordinary" mould without being forced to destroy first the mould.

It's difficult to describe it - when you see it in 3-dimensions it's obvious how it works. When you remove "les tiroirs" (basically used to give shape to cavities [contredépouille] / concave parts [les ergots] of the piece) you can take out of the mould the piece that would otherwise be stuck. You could say that it works like a kind of 3-D casse-tête chinois.
