-----------

The curious classification of property, which had played a great part in the old law, as res mancipi (real property in Italy, slaves, the chief domestic animals) and res nec mancipi, was abandoned and abolished; and the conveyance p404 of property was simplified by the disappearance of the ancient and cumbrous civil methods (mancipatio and in iure cessio) which were superseded by the natural process of simple deliver (traditio). Full ownership (dominium) could now be acquired be delivery. It could also be acquired by long possession or usucapio. This method of acquisition had formerly been inapplicable to provincial land (because the dominium belonged to the Roman people), and the praetors had introduced an equivalent institution (longi temporis praescriptio), which was extended to all kinds of property. Justinian simplified the law by applying the second method to land which could be acquired by prescription after ten or (in some cases) twenty years, and the first method to moveables, possession of which for three years produced full ownership. - http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/secondary/...

The time of acquisition by usucapio was fixed by the Twelve Tables at one year for movables and two years for immovables. Praescriptio thus constituted a kind of praetorian usucapio. In the time of Justinian usucapio and praescriptio (called also longi temporis possessio), as far as they affected the acquisition of ownership, differed only in name, usucapio being looked at from the point of view of property, praescriptio from the point of view of pleading. By the legislation of Justinian movables were acquired by three years possession, immovables by ten years possession where the parties had their domicile in the same province (inter praesentes), twenty years possession where they were domiciled in different provinces (inter absentes).

The prescription of Roman law (and of modern systems based upon it) is thus both acquisitive and extinctive. - http://56.1911encyclopedia.org/P/PR/PRESCRIPTION.htm

Usucapión veintenal
twenty year adverse possession

Explanation:

ten year and twenty year also have other terms but just to make it understandable in English, they first of all refer to the period of time for which adverse possession has occurred.
