English term or phrase: mascarenes
from a screen-play (written by 2 authors, one from the UK and one from the US).
The location is the opening party of the Fashion Week in a hip bar of Manhattan.
Description of the guests: "Hollywood faces, fashionettes,
glitterati, hangers-on, *mascarenes*, fame-f...ers."

I cannot find any references to the Mascarenes which would help me to understand the meaning of the word in this context. (Tons of hits on google for the Mascarene islands and different species of birds.)

It doesn't look offensive to me! I think the author is just playing with words.

Notes to answerer
Asker: According to the Kudoz rules I put the offensive tag on the question because of the word "fame-fuckers".
