Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice Explanation: This is one of several possible English renditions. Take a look at the following text from Amnesty International: http://www.amnesty-usa.org/ailib/aireport/ar99/mde23.htm “Ahmad bin Ahmad al-Mubalbil, a prayer leader from al-Jufer village in al-Ihsa, died reportedly in November while in the custody of members of the Hay`at al-Amr bil Ma`ruf Wan-Nahi `an al-Munkar, Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.” The name of this organization is not to be confused with the Islamic concept of AL-AMR BIL-MA’ROOF WAL-NAHY ‘AN AL-MUNKAR. This principle has been translated in a number of ways. One translation has it “bidding good and forbidding evil.” Take a look at the following: http://www.al-islam.org/polarization/16.htm “Now, "bidding to good and forbidding evil" has, before anything else, two fundamental principles: one is a profound and knowledgeable insight into the religion, and the other is a profound insight into how to act. If there is no profound knowledge of religion, as we learn from ahadith (traditions), the loss that will be incurred in doing this will be greater than its benefit. Addendum Explanation: I failed to make an important distinction in my previous posting, namely that "Committee" would refer to a local group, called LAJNA, while AL-HAY'A AL-'AMMA" would be called either the "General Commission" or "General Organization." Fuad |

This is the official name for the Mutawa3 organization in Saudi ARabia Explanation: Greetings. Fuad has rendered an accurate and excellent translation of the official title of this organizationa. FYI, that title refers to organization whose members the expatriate communities in Saudi Arabia generally refer to as 'Mutawa3iin = "volunteers." HTH. Khair, in sha' Allah.
