It is often used in place names in Arab countries, where it refers to either a mountainous region or a city on a hill. In Saudi Arabia, the city of Dhahran (where I attended school) is popularly known as Al-JABAL, because of its rocky terrain. The academic complex of King Fahad University in Dhahran is referred to as the "Jebel," because it was not only built on top of a hill, but carved into the rocky formations. JUBAIL is the diminutive form of the word JABAL, and is the name of an ancient town in eastern Saudi Arabia.
