horses and mules Explanation: It is not a typo, they are two types of horses, the first would be pure race racing horse, and the second a mixed race slow horse. It's an anology of how Allah has given some more than others. I suggest translating it as "horses and mules" الطِّرْف، بالكسر، من الخيل: الكريمُ العَتِيقُ، وقيل: هو الطويل القوائم والعُنُق المُطَرَّفُ الأُذنينِ، وقيل: هو الذي ليس من نِتاجكو والجمع أَطرافٌ وطُرُوفٌ، والأَُنثى بالهاء. يقال: فرس طِرْفٌ من خيل طُرُوفٍ، قال أَبو زيد: وهو نعت للذكور خاصّة. الكَوْدَنُ والكَوْدَنِيُّ: البِرْذَوْنُ الهَجِينُ، وقيل: هو البغل. ويقال للبِرْذَوْنِ الثَّقيلِ: كَوْدَنٌ، تشبيهاً بالبغل؛ قال امرؤ القيس: فغادَرْتُها من بَعْدِ بُدْنٍ رَذِيَّةً، تُغالي على عُوجٍ لها كَدِناتِ تُغالي أَي تسيرُ مُسْرِعةً. وفرس هَجِين بَيّنُ الهُجْنة إِذا لم يكن عتيقاً. |
