قال ابن عباس -رضي الله عنه-: دخلت على عمر حين طُعنْ، فقلت: أبشر بالجنة يا أمير المؤمنين، أسلمت حين كفر الناس، وجاهدت مع رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- حين خذله الناس، وقبض رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وهو عنك راضٍ، ولم يختلف في خلافتك اثنان، وقُتلت شهيداً، فقال عمر: أعد عليَّ، فأعدت عليه، فقال: والله الذي لا إله إلا هو، لو أن لي ما في الأرض من صفراء وبيضاء لافتديت به من هول المطلع.
