see below Explanation: It seems to me that "Isbiliya" has no special meaning by itself, but is simply a corruption of the original Latin name of the city, i.e. "Hispalis". The "p" became "b" (the letter "b" does not exist in classical Arabic), and the whole name was changed in order to make it easier to pronounce it in Arabic. A similar mutation happened to the word "Sicilia", which in Arabic became "Sukullia". As for the ancient name, Hispalis, apparently the city was founded by a Tartesus population called Hispal. |
