На територията на град ХХХ няма изградена канализационна мрежа и пречиствателна станция за отпадъчни води. В резултат на горепосоченото, жителите на града към настоящия момент са включили битово-фекалните отпадъчни води в изградени от самите тях примитивни съоръжения, като попивни ями, септични ями, филтрационни кладенци и т.н. Тези съоръжения събират но не пречистват отпадъчните води и чрез инфилтрация се явяват фактически замърсители на почвата, подпочвените и повърхностните води, което води до влошаване показателите на питейните води и респективно се явява заплаха за здравето на населението, както и за екологичното равновесие в района на населеното място.

От техн. гледна точка има разлика между попивна и септична яма, макар че на практика у нас т.н. "септична яма" действува и като попивна яма. Попивната яма е за "течни" отпадъци, защото течността попива във почвата. При септичната яма има и изхвърляне на "твърдите" отлагания...
