Tech/Engineering - Architecture / Castles
Catalan term or phrase: vans oberts
From a description of defences on an 11th-century castle:

English translation:doors and windoes (openings?)
Explanation:

I don\'t know if there\'s a more technical word to apply in the case of castles.

just a few ideas

Explanation:
The first thing that came into my head was the French word 'vanne' (gate), but it's probably not related to that. I've no idea what it could be, but perhaps one of the following.

I hope someone else can help you more.

Good luck!

Sheila

Crenel - A gap in the battlements along the wall.

Crenelation - Battlements at the top of a tower or wall.

Cross-and-orb - Modified cross slits to accommodate gunnery.

Loophole - Narrow, tall opening, wall slit for light, air, or shooting through.

neutral  Berni Armstrong: Wouldn't it be fun if "Cadafals" was related to "Cadafalch" - the architect who put all those battlements on his buildings in BCN :-)
