So there is the idiom “青出于蓝而胜蓝”，which means 青 comes from 蓝 but be better than 蓝。If you teach a student and he makes a greater success than you do, then he is “青出于蓝而胜于蓝”。

In Chinese, especially in spoken language, “青”is a color of deep blue, even more to the black, historically, it's said a pigment of 青 is extracted from a plant named “蓝”, but the 青 is much deeper and much more vivid than the color 蓝 shows.

'青出于蓝'is a 成语, so no, I don't think so.

The shoes actually have blue accents (the laces etc.). The 蓝 has nothing to do with that here? Thanks!
Thanks! I had forgotten about the Baidu Baike. That explanation totally makes sense. I was confused also b/c you know 青 can be more than just "blue" in Chinese.
