Acknowledgement: My thanks to Ray Luo for his entry and bschang for his confirmation. Although I found Ray Luo's explanation somewhat worthwhile, it failed to answer my question about the use of the Chinese unit of measurement in translation.

I translated the Chinese unit of distance as a Chinese mile, because most non-native Chinese speakers would have little or no idea what a li is. Moreover, there are likely as many pronunciations of the word as their are Chinese languages. Thus, knowing how to write it was difficult to ascertain.

I wanted your thoughts on the matter. Telling me about the Chinese Wall completely side-stepped the issue.
