What's 拍 and therefore 第一拍 and 空拍 here? For the first part, I have "Lü Shao-chia clearly remembers stepping onto the conductor’s podium for the first time and seeing the singers’ [it's a chorus] attentive and encouraging looks:..."

'Upon his first beat, all roll on the floor', he is so nervous that he gave an off beat.
