紅外線的波長由0.76um~1000um(微米),依其波長又可分為近紅外線0.76um~1.5um(微米);中紅外線1.5um ~5.6um(微米);遠紅外線5.6um ~25um(微米),及超紅外線25um~1000um(微米)四大類。

遠紅外線治療法起源於1976年中國上海崔欽煒醫生的臨床研究, 他發現遠紅外線可治療好凍傷, 在1977年在日本發揚光大, 以日本山崎診療為首, 聯合日本許多醫院, 作了七年以上的臨床試驗, 發現遠紅外線可治療50種以上的疾病:

红外线又分成近、中、远红外线。由红外线的测定装置上而言,大致可分为:光波在0.75微米-1.5微米以下称近红外线;1.5微米-1000微米称为远红外线。
“远红外线”中,对人体最有益的是4-14微米的光波,它是孕育宇宙生命生长的神奇能量,与地球生命体有着密不可分的关系,而国内外专家的研究证实,所有动、植物的生存、繁殖,都是在[远红外线]这个特定的波长下才得以进行,因此许多专家、学者称之为“生育光线”。生育光线能使水分子集团因缩小而活性化。因其频率与细胞体构成之分子、原子间的运动频率一致时,造成共鸣、共振、使分子的振动加大,其能量即被生物细胞吸收、活化组织细胞使血行良好,毒素、加强免疫力、并有防臭、干燥、除湿、抗菌等效果。远红外线具有下列四大特征:
