Keep the Wing Chun Tradition
Uplift Hua Xia as a Nation

Hi Ritchest,

Does this sound acceptable to you?
Here is what I did:

1. Searched Google for "咏春"
(And found that this was a school of boxing, made famous with such disciples as Bruce Lee, who started with a master of this school 叶问 in Hong Kong)

2. Everything becomes clear by now, but I need to gather all the pieces of information loaded into this couplet first, before I line them up and regroup them. And Lesley's post above is very helpful. She has done most of the search.

3. From the post above, we can tell that this couplet is displayed in the a memorial hall or hall of fame of that school of boxing.

4. This phrase serves as a praise as well as an admonition and encouragement to those who come to pay their respect to or admire the masters of this school. Therefore, the tense should be imperative, like the teachings of the masters to their students. This acutally make it easier to arrange because the sentence is shorter now.

5. Here are the little bits and pieces of information I could gather from the two short phrases:

咏春 the Wing Chun School of Boxing
传-- keeps, inherits, is being kept, inherited...
正统 the genuine/orthodox tradition

华夏 Hua Xia (China) the Chinese
振-- revive, uplift,
雄风 the great power, the spirit of a powerful nation

So, the logic of the couplet falls into two sentences as follows:

"Let's keep the genuine tradition of the Wing Chun School of Boxing

And uplift the spirit of China as a great and powerful nation"

Now I need to clean up the phrase a little bit, and cut the unnecessary words whereever I can, and save only the bone with essence, because it is a couplet and needs to be concise.

And I think "Hua Xia" is a better choice than "China" here because for one thing, it matches "Wing Chun" as a two-character expression instead of one; and secondly, everybody knows Hua Xia means China. And if one doesn't, well he or she won't be interested anyways, so never mind.

Hope this helps. Seems you've got a hard nut to crack this time. But they can be fun aren't they? Happy New Year to you!
