løftestang is, directly traslated, a lever (or crowbar) but can also be seen as a "catalyst" of sorts, or that little extra that gives a project an extra boost or lift, perhaps in terms of productivity or quality. The lever can be a person, idea, tool, action or motive, or "any means, instrument or agency used for achieving a purpose." (Webster's third new international dictionary)

I have only ever seen this meaning conveyed with the term "leverage". - suspect use of the term "løftestang" is a result of an earlier translation from English.
