family charter Explanation: Family charter refers to a written agreement between family members regarding business-related issues such as: ownership, voting/control and employment. A family charter may also be referred to as a family mission statement or a family constitution. Benefits of a family charter A written family charter can minimize family conflict by clearly laying out the "rules of the road" -- before specific problems arise. Family businesses generally operate in a very informal manner -- with family members entering the business and interacting with each other with unstated expectations of each other and of the business. Clearly describing expectations regarding roles, responsibilities, ownership rights and decision-making can help to reduce the likelihood of disappointment and conflict. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 mins (2016-03-30 22:10:42 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- We would recommend that any family business considers entering into a Family Charter. The Family Charter (sometimes called Family Constitutions or Protocols) are statements of intent or agreements entered into by the family members in relation to the family business. A Family Charter is a formal agreement between family members regulating their conduct in respect of the family business and although not normally legally binding, parts can be legally binding if this is required by the family. The Family Charter would normally set out confirmation of: •How the family want the business to be run •The goals and long term planning and strategy for the business •The family members’ different relationships with the business •How the family members should behave towards each other in the context of the business http://www.bannerjones.co.uk/page/family-charters |
