This is exactly what I was looking for. It places the whole thing in the right literary and historical context, breathes the time and place. It is the key to the sentiments expressed by the poem - inc. protestant stand- off against counter reformation.
As in all literary questions, the right answer seems self-luminous. Admirable.

Refers (of course) to a human body 'delicately' depicted 'in the flesh', hence my suggestion: that delicate body, a nude...
unless -and this is not clear, because you didn't enter the full sentence- it refers to 'a nude ashamed nation/people'
