Explanation:
‘Over schoon zand wordt te simpel gedacht, vind ik. Om de aandacht te vestigen op de complexiteit ervan heb ik er deze stelling aan gewijd. Allereerst is schoon zand vrij uniek, het komt zelden voor. Er is eigenlijk maar één bekend type schoon zand en dat is het schelpenzand dat in vogelkooien wordt gebruikt. Dit is ontzettend duur; voor een pond schelpenzand betaal je al snel een paar gulden.
Schoon zand, zoals het gebruikt wordt bij bouwprojecten, is de aanduiding voor behandeld zand. Daar is de ergste vervuiling al uit gehaald; dit soort zand kan worden «gewonnen» voor circa dertig gulden per ton. Dat is een veel interessantere prijs voor een aannemer of projectontwikkelaar.
