I am finishing this book on Iran and the writers says:

disagree  m_d_v: it's not so, because what if you are following Science as your major? Then Science can't be a betavak...

-> I think you're mistaken in assuming that the "beta" refers to a "minor" subject: it doesn't. The Dutch education system distinguishes between "alfa" (humanities), "gamma" (soc sci) and betavakken. Please consult a standard NL-Eng dictionary if in doubt.

agree  LAB2004: Absolutely no question. Also known as ('a' and ) 'b' vakken -

I don't quite agree with Adam Smith, the text suggests this is a German School (Studienkollege für Ausländische Studenten), and the German education system doesn't use bétavakken and alfavakken.

-> Ok... but still, once again, it's not really the Dutch educational system, but the German one. :)

disagree  Jack den Haan: Sorry, but this is absolutely incorrect. 'Betavakken' are subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology etc. Another term in Dutch for these and similar subjects is 'exacte vakken'.
