Law/Patents
Dutch term or phrase: Vredegerecht, Vrederechter
This is from a "Akte van Bekendheid" which has been drawn up by the Vrederechter at the Vredegerecht in Belgium. Is Vrederechter Justice of the Peace here and how would you translate Vredegerecht.

I would appreciate any help.

Many thanks
Willemina
Vredegerecht ([Explanation]), Vrederechter ([Explanation]),
Explanation:
No, these two words are untranslatable. Treat them as proper names and give an explanation within brackets or in a footnote. I challenge the translation found in EuroDicAutom. It would only mean anything to those English speakers who have expert knowledge about Switzerland; and to those it would be misleading!

Hartelijk dank aan jullie alledrie. Ik heb Sven's raadgeving opgevolgd en de woorden laten staan met een verklarende vertaling erachter. Uit de website verwijzing blijkt dat het Vredegerecht erg veel lijkt op het kantongerecht in Nederland (zelfde functies) dus dat was ook erg verhelderend.

Hartelijk dank!

Willemina

Sorry..

Explanation:
.. I forgot to mention that I copied the translation of the "vrederechter" from Eurodicautom. (http://eurodic.ip.lu/cgi-bin/edicbin/EuroDicWWW.pl)I also add an example from which is obvious that a "vrederechter" is a judge of a "vredegerecht":

Explanation:
Hi Willemina, obviously a somewhat sticky issue here. I would be very careful in using 'cantonal court', which is confusing for many reasons. I would even go as far as putting the French equivalent behind there, plus the place name where the Court is located. Leaving it untranslated is, well, untranslated as you've got to show at least another meaning of the word, or draw a parallel in French.
Good luck!

agree  Sven Petersson: Very good idea to put in the official French term, but bad idea to use "Peace Court" etc.

-> I am aware the term "Peace Court'is realy only accorded to the International Court at the 'Vredespaleis' in The Hague.
