Groetjes uit Nederland Explanation: "Groetjes uit Nederland" is the correct spelling. It means "greetings from the Netherlands". The other one is intended as a phonetic transcription, I think. But if you want to pronounce it, try this: khroo-tyuhs uit Nay-duhr-lahnd. (with kh the Dutch throat sound, similar to 'ch' in Bach and the Scottish 'loch'; 'ui' a diphthong, can be approximated by pronouncing it as eh-u) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 17 hrs 58 mins (2005-07-20 09:35:40 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I\'m sorry, I can\'t type IPA here and can\'t find a website with pronunciation of this sentence either. (There is however http://travlang.com/languages/ (select languages) where you can listen to other words and short phrases in Dutch.) The \'e\' \'tjes\' is pronounced as a schwa sound, like the \'uh\' in the English \'the\'. The \'j\' is like the \'y\' in you. So, \'tjes\' makes tyuhs in English phonetics. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day 17 hrs 8 mins (2005-07-21 08:45:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Yes, it is almost like \'chess\', except that the \'e\' is more like the \'e\' in \'oven\', an \'uh\' sound, unlike the clear \'eh\' sound in \'chess\'. |
