Dutch term or phrase: proces-verbaal van aangifte

Context:

I am currently translating a police report, and am a little confused by the above phrase. After looking up both terms in my Van den Ende Legal Lexicon, it appears that they both mean "report"!

Is this another case of the Dutch language using two separate words for the same thing? (double Dutch as it were?)

Hi,
I see your point. I think that it should really read:
een proces-verbaal maken van het aangifte doen
I.e. When someone goes into a police station he will first verbally report on the issue and only after the police have listened and decided to proceed would a written report be made. Therefore 'proces-verbaal' would be the written statement while the 'aangifte' is the verbal part.
I hope this makes sense!

In order to make things 'official', police has to make a PV (proces-verbaal), an official report of what has happened (this can be anything: a.o. a declaration of a stolen car, etc).

PV can also mean a 'police-warrant', but this is not the case here.

Just consider this as an observation: report declaration. I don't know in your context, but it would be a declaration that the police report occurred.
I hope it helped. In any case, to simplify matters, I would just say : to report to the police (an incident, crime,...).
