Dutch to English translations [PRO]
Dutch term or phrase: toeleverancier
Context:

I'm currently translating a quality assurance handbook, and am having problems translating the above term properly.

Sentence (glossary of terms):

'Gezien vanuit het oogpunt van de klant, levert de toeleverancier aan de leverancier'

The reason I'm having problems with this particular sentence, is because all my dictionaries simply translate 'toeleverancier' as 'supplier', which means I'd be using the word 'supplier' twice ('leverancier').

Any suggestions welcome - KudoZ points will be awarded asap.

Thanks,

English translation:supplier enterprise OR intermediate supplier OR local supplier OR subcontractor
Explanation:
Hi Pikey,

Difficult one! The problem with industrial supplier, in my view point, is that it is too specific. Services can also be supplied, etc.

I found the following:

A. de hoofdaannemer neemt als klant van de toeleverancier deel aan het ontwerp van het product en geeft alle of een deel van de technische specificaties aan de onderaannemer (of toeleverancier) en/of verschaft deze het materiaal dat moet worden verwerkt;

http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1998/en_398R2700.htm...
A. the customer enterprise, also said main-contractor, participates in the conception of the product providing, even partially, technical specifications to the supplier enterprise, also said subcontractor, and/or provides it with the materials to be processed;

and

"Purchasing brings a business perspective to supplier selection. Once R&D identifies an intermediate supplier based on the necessary science and technological requirements, purchasing takes a look at the supplier's financial profile, scale-up manufacturing capabilities or potential, and other factors," she says.

25) In elk geval moet voor brood/banket in aanmerking worden genomen dat met name kleine producenten die uitsluitend of vrijwel uitsluitend voor de verkoop in eigen bakkerij of als plaatselijke toeleverancier voor de levensmiddelendetailhandel produceren, hierbij buiten beschouwing zijn gelaten.

Het aantal van grote ondernemingen afhankelijke kleine toeleveranciers is het grootst in Norrköping, Eskilstuna en Västerås.

The dependence of small-scale subcontractors on large companies is greatest in Norrköping, Eskilstuna and Västerås.

My choice would be 'intermediate supplier' because it indicates precisely what is meant with the Dutch term in a general context.

Good luck!

It was very hard to choose between these 4 very good answers, but as Marijke's was the most detailed, I decided to award the points to her. At times it's a pity that we can't grade more than one answer....

Explanation:
hedendags Nederlands, 'toeleveren' is 'onderdelen, materiaal verschaffen aan een bedrijf, fabrikant enz.', and a 'teoleveringsbedrijf' is a 'fabriek. zaak die halffabrikaten maakt'. In English, thus, toeleverer would be an industrial supplier or a supplier of partly finished goods.

industry supplier

Explanation:
Using 'industry supplier' enables you to differentiate from 'supplier' - a supplier could be anyone/any company supplying to anyone/any company, whilst industry supplier emphasizes the fact that you're dealing with a subcontractor/supply industry (toeleveringsbedrijf).

My dictionaries and, well, some experience...

e.g. Supplier of semi-finished products

Explanation:
I think that, depending on the specific context, the most appropriate thing you could do is to add something before or after the word "supplier" or "suppy company" that would indicate what this party delivers to the customer's supplier, for instance "supplier of semi-finished products", "industrial supplier" as suggested by Mr. Cox, "raw materials supplier", or something like this. It is true that in Dutch, leverancier and toeleverancier mean the same and are used as such, so translating a supplier's supplier requires some creativity!
