Thank you very much - I felt philosphy was in appropriate in the contract and I was really hoping that a native would be able to come up with a better alternative. Incidentally - I have my doubts about whether it is "spot on", but I used it anyway!

wrong answer

Explanation:
I'm sorry to say that you selected the wrong answer. "Social studies" in Dutch is "maatschappijleer". The term "levensbeschouwing" is far more general and covers also the religious aspects of life.

Please note that being a native in the target language does not guarantee a perfect understanding of the source language... so a translation by a native speaker does not ALWAYS override other translation suggestions...

weltanschauung, outlook on life, personal and social studies

Explanation:
As I seem to have started quite a debate, let me just clarify; I did not choose social studies because it was offered by a native speaker, but because, given the context and my understanding of the Dutch it simply was the best proposal (i.e. on the merits). I got quite a few helpful terms though from all of you and I am grateful for your efforts.
Of course, you need not agree with my final choice and, incidentally, I still feel that the "perfect" solution has not been offered.
Thank you all for trying, Titia

agree  Michael Beijer: A "perfect" solution has not been offered as there is none. The UK/US and Dutch systems are very different. See also my refs, to show just how hard – if not downright impossible – this pesky Dutch term is to translate.

regarding ‘PSE’:

see e.g.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal,_Social_and_Health_Ed...

It seems this element of English-language state school curriculums can take various forms:

US (+ Wales): ‘Personal and Social Education’ (PSE)
England and Wales: ‘Personal, Social and Health Education’ (PSHE)
Ireland: Social, Personal and Health education (SPHE)

It is also known as:

PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)
PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development) and
PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education)

"Levensbeschouwing

and:

https://goo.gl/V1aNq3 "Encountering Religious Pluralism in School and Society, By Thorsten Knauth" has:

"2.2 Specifications of the setting and the research process

In order to examine students’ views on religion, we used the Dutch translation of the qualitative REDCo-questionnaire as it was developed for the REDCo comparative research project. Some slight changes have been made, in order to make the questions more comprehensible for the Dutch students.

An important distinction is that we chose to use the word ‘worldview’ [levensbeschouwing; in German Weltanschauung] instead of‘religion’ [godsdienst] in recognition of the fact that everybody in some way or another reflects upon his or her life, (cf. Zuurdeeg, 1958, p. 96 ff.), and clarified to the students that every person has a worldview. We made that decision because most Dutch adolescents are not that strongly committed to institutionalised religion. By using the broader term ‘worldview’, we expected to get more meaningful reactions and to include as many students as possible."
