I've never heard of 'riffelen', but I've seen a 'riffelvijl' before (a type of file).
Hence, my more or less educated guess: to file or to polish.

And my search engines indicate 'riffelen' as a Danish word...

Explanation:
another guess - in German, a Riffel is a corrugation or groove, and Riffelung is corrugation or fluting. (Compare english riffle, 'a groove or slat in a sluice to cqtch free particles').
