De index, of het indexcijfer van de consumptieprijzen zoals dat officieel heet, is een cijfer dat de evolutie weergeeft van de (kleinhandels)prijzen voor een aantal producten en diensten die de « Belg of Luxemburger» veel consumeert. Stijgen de prijzen van de producten en diensten dan stijgt ook de index. Overstijgt de index een bepaald punt, dan worden de lonen automatisch ook verhoogd omwille van de koppeling tussen beide.
