Politiek en wiskunde? Als er twee dingen zijn die niets met elkaar te maken hebben, dan is het wel politiek en wiskunde, zou je zo denken bij het eerste zicht. In deze lezing wil Karen François een betoog opbouwen dat het tegendeel beweert.
In het eerste deel gaat ze in op het zijnsstatuut of de ontologie van de wiskunde. Is wiskunde zoiets dat (zoals Plato het zich voorstelde) uit de hemel komt vallen of is het in tegendeel een menselijk artefact zoals kunst of taal of ethiek? Feit is, wiskunde is zo oud als de mensheid en met een verwijzing naar het Ishangobeentje kunnen we zelf 20.000 jaar teruggaan in de tijd.
