The term appears in a course document titled "Physiology of Trees". It refers to the trophic level occupied by trees in an ecosystem, i.e. levels that describe the transfer of material, nutrition, and energy in a system.

".. to tell how trees get their nourishment (phytotrophy) and how they grow, and describe their properties and those of their wood ..."

"The phytotrophy of trees:
Trees make what they need to live and grow by themselves (primary production).
To do so, they draw carbon dioxide out of the surrounding air in through numerous tiny openings (stomata or stomates) on the underside of their leaves and absorb water and inorganic matter out of the soil. With the aid of chlorophyll and sunlight as the source of energy, they convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar and starch. The oxygen released in the process is returned to the atmosphere through the stomata. This conversion of inorganic, exogenous material into organic, endogenous sub-stances by the tree is called assimilation. Since the conversion only takes place during the daytime hours, i.e. in the presence of light, it is referred to as photosynthesis."

I found "phototroph" = organism that uses sunlight to produce food (such as plants and algae) .
