The 'ONLY'? Explanation: 'eaglesclif,' or Mohammed AL-Obaidi, answered the question about "Skunk (animal)" on July 25 with one word, which my computer could not read -but Brent, the asker, accepted it and offered 4 KudoZ points. Obaidi's explanation was: "This is the only meaning of skunk in arabic. References: Arabic dictionary", you will find that this is the only meaning to the word s">If you look in the "on-line Sakhr English<>Arabic dictionary", you will find that this is the only meaning to the word skunk." I did not like the explanation, but refrained from commenting on it before checking the matter with the 'winner' himself. I sent Mr. Obaidi --through his website-- a message of congratulations, but asked him to please transliterate this word for me in 'Latin' letters. I have not yet received any answer. Hence, here are my comments for the general good: 1- If Mr. Obaidi's word is Zareeban (with a small 'dot' under the first letter), I rest my case. He was the first to answer, and he was rightfully selected as the winner. 2- If it is not, then there is a MAJOR problem here --because SEVERAL reliable sources support the word I've chosen. 3- Professional translators rarely, if ever, insist that such and such a word is the "only" meaning for practically anything. To support any of their claims/choices, they NEVER use one single dictionary/reference --no matter how advanced it is (with due respect to the On-line Sakhr English-Arabic dictionary. 4- I frequently wonder how can askers in general pick up the 'right' answer, since they do not even know the language!! |
