Scientists searching for the cause of road accidents have discovered even more disturbing implications of this corner cutting. If you are driving down an empty street and glance away, when you look back the brain assumes it is looking at much the same image it was looking at a second before. There is often a significant time delay before it registers that the scene has changed and that there is now someone standing in the middle of the road. This phenomenon is known as change blindness. The reason it happens is that the extraordinary quantity of information that we are constantly receiving through our senses cannot all be processed instantaneously.
