| rendition রূপদান Explanation: "Rendition" is often used to mean the act or result of rendering/translating/transforming a thing from one format/type into another. For example, Satyajit Ray's "Pather Panchali" is the film 'rendition' of Bivutivushon's novel "Pather Panchali". In such cases, চলচ্চিত্ররূপ (বা অন্যকিছুতে-রূপ), রূপ, রূপায়ন, রূপান্তর, রূপদান, etc can be used depending on the sentence. Rendition can mean straightforward 'translation' (eg. the English rendition of the novel Pather Pachali- in which case the word 'অনুবাদ' would be more appropriate ) -- or an interpretation (personal/artistic or otherwise) of something (eg. The maestro gave a fascinatingly original rendition of the raga). It can be musical rendition of written scores or of a famous play. Rendition can mean other things too - but I think the above covers the basic idea for most commonly used purposes. The idea of translation or interpretation (in a very broad sense) or transformation seems to be the key here. You need to know your Bangla well and adjust the word according to the context. Here is a definition of "Rendition" according to the Longman Dictionary : "the act or result of rendering: eg (a) a translation (b) a performance, interpretation. I think the 'performance' part of the definition above does not exactly mean 'পরিবেশনা' and surely not 'সম্পাদন', rather the delivery of an artistic/or otherwise 'interpretation' of something (eg. নাট্যরূপ পরিবেশন, etc ). My English > Bengali dictionary uses another word, which though I find quite awkword: "ভাবরূপ প্রস্ফুটন". Another possible word is "উপস্থাপন". By the way, if this part of the definition "the act or result of rendering" is taken separately, then technically there can be quite a number of other translations, since the word "render" means a lot of other things, for example: "to melt down; extract by melting (render lard); to deliver for consideration, approval etc.; to direct the execution of, administer (eg Justice)- (পরিচালনা বা সম্পন্ন করা ?); to apply a coat of plaster or cement directly to (প্রলেপ প্রয়োগ? সিমেন্টের পলেস্তারা লাগানো?); etc etc.etc. (look up your dict.). In such cases, "রূপদান" would be most inappropriate ! Finally, one little quiz to other translators: What is the meaning and possible translation of "Extraordinary Rendition" ? It's a recent term coined by CIA for their practice of secretly and illegaly (probably) transfering terrorist detainees from Afganistan and other places to Guantanamo Bay. What do you think ?
