在法语里面，对应margin一词的marge（n.f) 可以指示任何空白的空间/区间。可以马后炮一下：解释不管在经济层面还是IT架构方面的各种区间都可以reduce。不过确实单从只言片语，不太可能明确它所指代的真正意义。

此外，一丢丢小看法：profit margin 被翻译成“利润率”我觉得也是不妥的，或者说从词源学的角度来说 sources 本身就不太合理。但是quote的人多了，也就约定俗成了。

Margin的实质是一个差值，也是因为这样所以我会跟 @Frank Feng 较劲“率”这个字。如果文中有说明和“利润”无关的话，那可以考虑参考(参考参考参考！！！不是采用)macro当中“贸易逆差/顺差”的说法，强调”差额“。经济领域各种所谓工具和趋势太多，分析师总是想方设法各种 PPT 花式炫技，但明白原理我觉得便可迎刃而解。
PS. 我的意思不是说 margin = “贸易逆差/顺差”，这里跟贸易没有半毛钱关系，我只是强调可以沿用”逆差/顺差“的思路来找词，感谢peers提醒。

@clearwater 那你觉得Margin在这里怎么解释呢？Forrester的人有什么说法呢？

在商业领域，Margin这个词指的就是利润（率），或者某些场景里面指“边际利润”；如果是投资领域，还有“点差”、“保证金”的意思；而在IT领域，似乎没有看到过margin这个词有什么特别的意思。

Google一下"margin+saas"，出来的内容都是关于SaaS如何影响利润（率）的

@Frank，I cannot say that you're totally right here, but I have to admit that the source is not so well phrased... and it may refer to a single product or a company. So you are right in this question.

FYI, 刚才确认了一下，profit margin是指公司的利润率，不是单个产品的margin。是公司整体gross profit/net sales

@LIZ 如果您觉得我理解的上下文的意思没问题，那这里就更应该是“利润率”了 - 因为“利润”（虽然margin确实可以指利润）的降低，不能说明是传统软件公司“不贪心”，可能是因为卖的软件数量少了（竞争不利，卖不出去），所以导致利润总额下降了。

在这个文章的上下文中，说的是软件公司不要把利润率（加成）定的太高，比如成本5块的，非要卖10块，那就没法竞争了；如果成本5块的，定价6块，利润率降低了，但是竞争力增强了，利润总额可能还会上升呢

As I said, margins could be both 成本&利润，it's the difference between 成本&售价。利润率就像字面理解一样，是一个%。但是margin是一个实数。如果成本=10，售价=15，那么margin=5。而利润率=50%。Hope this may clarify!

是的，常用的用法是营业利润率(Operating profit margins)的简称，可这里语境不吻合，也有营业毛利的意思，可这里语境对不上，用在证券领域还有保证金的意思。利润率，肯定会去提高，而不是降低。
