Engleski naziv gig economy sastoji se od žargonizma gig, kojim se prvotno označavao glazbeni angažman (gaža) i imenice economy ʻekonomijaʼ. Naziv je stvoren početkom 2009. na vrhuncu ekonomske krize kad je nezaposlenost bila visoka. U hrvatskome se pojavljuje naziv gig ekonomija ili gig-ekonomija. Takva se ekonomija temelji se na tome da tvrtke za obavljanje nekih poslova zapošljava neovisne stručnjake (slobodnjake) na određeno, kratko vrijeme. Takvo zapošljavanje postaje sve popularnije jer je radna snaga sve mobilnija, posao se može obaviti s bilo kojega mjesta, a radnici mogu birati privremene poslove i projekate širom svijeta. Umjesto naziva gig(-)ekonomija u hrvatskome se standardnom jeziku preporučuje naziv ekonomija honorarnih poslova.
