Alfred Wegener's hypotese fra 1916 er, at hele Jordens faste skorpe er opdelt i 7 plader, der flyder og bevæger sig på den flydende del under skorpen.
Denne opdeling i plader følger ikke helt de kendte kontinenter; derfor er betegnelsen 'plate tectonics' = 'pladetektonik' mere korrekt.
