another way of saying it would be:
Elle faisait figure de leader au sein de son école.

neutral  Ghyslaine LE NAGARD: Oui moi aussi j'aime bien les propositions mais qu'advient-il de "pionnière" ? , par ailleurs un "leader" dans le système éducatif anglosaxon fait vraiment référence à un leader ou à un groupe par ex. "cheer leader" et non pas à populaire !

  -> oui... cela dit, leader s'utilise aussi au sens premier, une personne dont le charisme entraîne les autres... et le contexte est très vague. Pionnier, en fçais, ça fait un peu far west...
