agree  Eliza Hall: Yes, I think this is it. The term seems to be modeled on "nonprofit"/"not-for-profit" vs. "for-profit." It's an attempt to turn a nominally negative term (not, non-) into one that states what it is FOR (purpose) rather than what it's against (profit).
