Hôpital de district Explanation: I ran an Alta Vista search for "hôpital de district" + OMS (World Health Organizaton) and got lots and lots of hits, including a whole lot for Africa, so I'd think you were quite safe on this one. Relevant Alta Vista page, below: Reference: http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?q=%2B%22h%F4pital+de+... |

Hopital regional Explanation: This is the hospital which serves the district. It is at 2-5 hours driving distance from 7-10 health centers and offers surgery, obstetrics and other kind of help you can't get in the health center. Usually in Africa the first time you find a doctor is the district hospital. |

centre hospitalier Explanation: CENTRE HOSPITALIER (CH) can be UNIVERSAITAIRE (CHU), NATIONAL (CHN) and maybe others. All over in France this terms is commonly used. Two examples : www.hopital-paul-morel-vesoul.fr www.ch-valvert-marseille.fr And the African web search machine MBOLO confirmed that the term is used in French-speaking Africa (Burkina Fasso, Ivory Coast...) Check out www.mbolo.com, tap in CENTRE HOSPITALIER and you will get lots of hits! Bon courage, Nikki Reference: http://www.hopital-paul-morel-vesoul.fr www.mbolo.com (moteur de recherche du web francophone africain) |

centre hospitalier régional Explanation: Just a variant that I have seen used for many French institutions. Knowing that the French were for a while in many African countries, maybe this term has stayed there even after their departure. |
