English term or phrase: lever
Sentence: "...which lever to move round after she took each picture."

Context: a six-year old child finds her grandmother's old camera (silver film) and wants to take pictures.

Is "lever", levier d'armement ou de défilement ? Anyway I believe it must definitely be "levier" and not "molette" for instance.
What do you think? Thank you. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

As a French native speaker, "manette" and "tirer" are the (non-technical) terms that come to my mind for this https://tinyurl.com/yasz6c4p.
Additionally, even if it is not direct speech (nor reported speech, strictly speaking, for that matter) IMO it definitely qualifies as internal focalization, where the author puts the reader in one of the character's shoes. Since the asker said it was for a novel, I'd aim to use something that subtly suggests to the reader what goes through the mind of a six-year old.

neutral  Tony M: If this is a film wind-on lever, as seems almost certain, I'm not sure that 'manette' is quite the right kind of lever; I'm even less sure about 'tirer', since the action is more of a rotation with the thumb. Not the child's words, as it's reported speech

Je rejoins la réponse de Sandra. A 6 ans quand on découvre un appareil d'un autre age, on ne parle pas de levier ou de manette.... Non plus à 50 ans, si c'est la grand-mère qui pose la question.
