The prefix is separable which means you can put an object between it and the main part of the verb : "can you scale your drawing up?". "In view of the decrease in raw materials, maybe we should downscale production / scale production down/consider downscaling production". Apart from being a machine used for weighing, usually the plural "scales", a scale is a sequence of marks against which various criteria can be measured. You can see how the following are arrived at, with "scale" to mean : barème, gamme (musique), dessiner à l'échelle réduite There is a ratio of proportionate reduction or increase. I like the French word "échelle" here as there is no clearer image of proportional increase or decrease if you imagine someone going up or down the ladder, rung by rung. changement d'échelle Explanation: It seems strange that "change of scale" should consistantly mean "upscaling", i.e. "going up" and not "going down" as well, but it seems to be the case.
