Hallo Kollegen,

es geht um eine TV-Dokumentation aus den USA in der sich mehrere Leute unterhalten. Einer von Ihnen ist ein Naturbursche (Person B), der immer Barfuß läuft und sagt, dass er noch nie krank war. Darauf folgt folgender Dialog:

Person A: Wow. Do you take any herbs or anything like that?
Person B: No. *Copenhagen*. Coffee and aspirin that's the extent of my...
Person A: *Copenhagen*, coffee and aspirin.
Person C: That's a healthy diet.

Meine Frage ist nun, ob es sich bei *Copenhagen* nur um ein Synonym für Kaffee und Aspirin handelt, er das Gebäck "Kopenhagener" meint (in den USA, meines wissens nach, doch eigentlich "Danish pastry") oder vielleicht etwas ganz anderes?

Vielen Dank an alle für Ihre Antworten und die zusätzlichen Informationen. Ich wäre im Leben nicht darauf gekommen, dass es ein Markenname sein könnte.

In diesem Fall ist Kautabak wohl die beste Wahl, da es in der Dokumentation um etwas komplett anderes geht und hier nur Smalltalk geführt wird.

In diesem Fall ist Kautabak wohl die beste Wahl, da es in der Dokumentation um etwas komplett anderes geht und hier nur Smalltalk geführt wird.

agree  Thomas Pfann: Wie genau man hier sein muss, wird sich aus dem weiteren Kontext ergeben. Vielleicht genügt einfach „Tabak“ oder „Kautabak“ in der Übersetzung, um das Publikum nicht mit einem Markennamen, mit dem es u.U. gar nichts anfangen kann, zu verwirren.

Explanation:
Smokeless Tobacco (auch Dipping Tobacco, Dip oder Moist Snuff genannt) ist die englischsprachige Bezeichnung für losen Tabak aus den USA; die Übersetzung in das Deutsche lautet Rauchloser Tabak. Es handelt sich um eine spezielle Art des Kautabaks.

Meine Lösung was nicht als Üversetzungsvorschlag gedacht, sondern als Erklärung, um was es sich bei Copenhagen handelt. Natürlich reicht da Kautabak vollkommen.

agree  Thomas Pfann: Wie genau man hier sein muss, wird sich aus dem weiteren Kontext ergeben. Vielleicht genügt einfach „Tabak“ oder „Kautabak“ in der Übersetzung, um das Publikum nicht mit einem Markennamen, mit dem es u.U. gar nichts anfangen kann, zu verwirren.

I would suggest keeping "Copenhagen" and adding a description, Kautabak, Snus, or whatever, when you know just what form is beimg taken for breakfast.

"Smokeless tobacco/Rauchloser Tabak" is, IMO, much too generic for the specific product meant here. It is very likely to be a "plug" of chewing tobacco/Kautabak or a pinch of moist tobacco/snus/Feuchttabak or, as a generic term, oral tobacco/Mundtabak.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the name Copenhagen has its origins in the relation to "Snus", the Scandinavian oral tobacco product. product

Although an oral tobacco product, it is not a true chewing tobacco, but is placed between the lip and gum/teeth and sucked.
