English term or phrase: feed the cows out the back

Hi everyone! Urgent help needed, as the deadline is pressing.

In an instructional video, a mechanic is explaining a few things you should and shouldn't do while servicing a certain type of motor:

"...is that we perhaps shouldn’t idle them more than four minutes. We shouldn’t do short runs. We shouldn’t feed the cows out the back like a lot of people do. They need a fair… they need to reach working temperature twice…"

Anyone know what this idiom means? I myself have never heard of it.

Vielen Dank an alle für die ergiebige Diskussion. Ich war schließlich auch überzeugt davon, dass es eher wörtlich gemeint ist. Nun weiß ich nicht, wie und wem ich die Punkte geben soll. Der Hinweis in die richtige Richtung kam zuerst von Thomas, der konkrete Ausdruck, den ich verwendet habe, von Uta und schließlich eine wichtige Bestätigung der Bedeutung dann von Bernd. Also eigentlich habt ihr alle Punkte verdient. Nun weiß ich nicht, ob das hier bei KudoZ geht: Wenn ihr eure Antworten unten einstellt, kann man dann die Punkte "splitten"?

Sie taten also genau das (... like a lot of people do), wovon der Mechaniker im Quelltext explizit abrät.
Was auch immer daran schlecht für den Motor sein mag: Häufiges Anfahren/Anhalten bzw. häufiges Ein-/Ausschalten des Motors, die lange Stehzeit mit laufendem Motor im Leerlauf, das langsame Fahren mit schleifender Kupplung im ersten Gang...

Frage: Handelt es sich um einen Motor mit Schaltgetriebe oder Automatik?
Egal, laut dem Mechaniker im Video sollte man das Vieh jedenfalls nicht direkt aus dem Fahrzeug heraus füttern...

Kann so schwer nicht sein, Kinderspiel:

"And our son, when he was two years old, was driving the pickup and he’d guide the pickup while I’d throw flakes out."

Obacht, bitte kein Kind ans Steuer lassen - ob das der Mechaniker vielleicht meinte?

Vom Kontext her würde ich darauf tippen, dass etwas ähnliches wie „idling“ und „doing short runs“ gemeint ist. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass so ein Cowboy heutzutage tatsächlich mit seinem Pickup-Truck im Schritttempo (oder langsamer) über die Weide fährt und die Kühe daraus füttert. Unser Mechaniker meint das vielleicht nicht wörtlich, meint aber möglicherweise dieses Langsamfahren.

Merkwürdig, dass die Suche nach dieser Wendung (auch in Abwandlungen) so überhaupt keine Treffer zutage bringt. Scheint also entweder eine ganz private Redewendung dieses Mechanikers oder eben doch durchaus wörtlich gemeint zu sein.

Vielen Dank Alice! Auch ein Super-Input. Das wäre echt sehr spezfisch, aber vielleicht wäre "die Sache falsch angehen" die neutralste, risikoärmste Übersetzungsvariante...

Ich vermute, es heißt soviel wie "eine Sache falsch angehen", "etwas verkehrt herum anpacken".

Hier ist ein landwirtschaftlicher Thread, der den Begriff "feed out the back" nutzt (cattle statt cows):

, die zeigen, dass die Futtertische von denen in dem Thread die Rede ist oft hinten eine höhere Seite haben als vorne.

Das Vieh wird also über die falsche (hinderliche) Seite gefüttert.

So verstehe ich es jedenfalls :-). Vielleicht weiß ja jemand Genaueres?

Ähnliche deutsche Redewendungen aus dem landwirtschaftlichen Bereich wären dann "das Pferd von hinten aufzäumen" oder "den Ochsen vor den Karren spannen".

Thanks Cilian! Yes, I definitely wanted to stray from the cow example since it wouldn't make sense to a German reader. I was hoping to paraphrase it in a natural idiomatic way, but I have to understand it first. "Taking the time to do it right" might just be the way to go, good input!

I’ve never heard this expression either but it seems to be saying that feeding cattle is not just a matter of throwing some hay on the ground in the yard, but is much more complicated and time-consuming than that.

If you’re servicing this engine, you should take the necessary time to do it right

I don’t see any reason to stick to the cows example unless there are cows in the video.
Any help?
