Due to 50 observed tumor-related deaths and 20 observed deaths, the power was reduced to 26% for survival and 32% for tumor-related death, or a stronger effect size of a hazard ratio of 0.40 and 0.32, respectively, was needed to keep with the power of 85%.

Zum Kontext - eigentlich waren für die Analyse mehr beobachtete Todesfälle geplant, um eine Power von 85% zu erreichen. Was ich jetzt hier inhaltlich nicht verstehe ist: a stronger effect size of a hazard ratio of ... was needed.

agree  Nina-Maria Nahlenz: "[...] eine größere Effektstärke mit einer HR von 0,40 und 0,32 [...]." Um die Power von 85% aufrechtzuerhalten, sind größere Effekte erforderlich, die wiederum zu einem signifikanten Ergebnis führen. Zumindest verstehe ich das so.

Explanation:
Hazard Ratio is usually P(event occurs in the treatment arm)/ P(event occurs in the control arm). So the greater/stronger the treatment effect, the lower the probability of e.g. a tumour-related death in the treatment arm i.e. smaller numbers here mean bigger treatment effects.
