English term or phrase: mental furniture
mental furniture is to be understood as the knowledge you require over the years. Some of it gets thrown out in the course of time. The flexibility of "mental furniture" is important for the translation.

German translation:geistiges Mobiliar
Explanation:
According to your explanation "mental furniture" is clearly a metaphoric expression, comparing the acquisition of knowledge with the acquisition of furniture during our lifetime: we keep the good and valuable and throw out the bad, broken or only temporarily needed. The German term "geistiges Mobiliar" conveys the same meaning.

mentales Mobiliar

Explanation:
Not knowing more of your context, I think a literal translation might work. I like mentales Mobiliar for the alliteration... mentale Bagage also comes to mind, but I wouldn't use it because it has a slightly derogatory connotation, at least to my mental furniture. Hope this helps a bit!

"vertrautes Bündel von Auffassungen und Einstelllungen"

Explanation:
This is a quotation so we should not use it without permission and credit. Besides that, I am sure it is much too long for your translation but it sounds so good that I wanted to pass it on. - http://www.uni-siegen.de/~ifan/ungewu/heft7/korenke7.htm
