It would be good to know WHY the participants have sore heads - from bumping into things? From drinking too much?

In eihter case, you might be able to say s.th. like:
...wobei viele der Teilnehmer einen schmerzenden Kopf auskurieren müssen...
...sich wegen ihrer schmerzenden Köpfe nur sehr behutsam bewegen...

If the sore heads are due to an overindulgence in adult beverages, s.th. like "verkatert" or "leicht verkatert" (depending on degree of hangover) might also work.
