should cover both; as was explained, these "tanks" are open, and the effluent collects in large lagoons stinking up entire areas (in Illinois, they are just starting to crack down on these) and, what's worse, polluting the rivers.
I don't think there's an equivalent; cows are kept mostly outside here; they come in for milking/feeding (and possibly, producing waste, of course)

Hier wohl "Holzkübel" oder sowas, in denen die Tierkadaver aufbewahrt werden. Aber das klingt so wenig eindeutig, da würde ich nachfragen, um mich nicht in die nessseln zu setzen.

: animal waste here means manure and slatted tanks are usually built into the floor of animal enclosures, so that waste falls through. Perhaps you could come up with the German equivalent
