snowbird ( Junco hyemalis) , family Emberizidae, subfamily Fringallidae) Explanation: if this is in an ornithological context I would not dare to attempt a translation. Just leave it. If you need the family and subfamily, you decide. the snowbird (as above) is a migrating bird, hence the other meaning of the term (see below). Schneefink (Montifringilla nivalis) survives (as the name suggests) in snowy mountain fringes. They (Schneefink and snowbird) are closely related, the species probably has been introduced to the US from Europe and has developed different habits and markings (Like all of us). Please see illustrations as quoted under References. Re: Schneevogel: I can't find it in any books, nor in the web. However, there could be a totally different meaning: Oxford Dictionary: North. Amer. informal: a northerner who moves to a warmer Southern state in the winter. In this case the correct answer is: ZUGVOGEL in a literal sense, as well as in an idiomatical sense. Don't miss the pictures! HTH Reference: http://zoologie.forst.tu-muenchen.de/HEITLAND/BSWT/AVES/PASS... Reference: http://polaris.umuc.edu/~skimblet/regular1.html |
