English term or phrase: one-degree-offreedom motion
Document WO2007/119173 describes a prosthesis comprising a spherical joint with three degrees of freedom positioned at the centre of the medial condyle and combined with a track that does not constrain prosthesis movement along a set path. The prosthesis does not therefore precisely approximate the one-degree-offreedom motion of a natural knee joint and does not completely recreate the anatomical constraints of the joint, especially in cases where the anatomical knee structures are damaged or have been cut or removed to allow the prosthesis to be inserted. As a result, the joint is less controlled than under natural conditions, creating a relative movement which is less anatomical and at the same time placing an unnatural load on the other parts of the knee structures
